Cold & pneumonia
Hamsters are excellent and hardy pets, but respiratory problems are a common problem to be aware of. Pneumonia is defined as any inflammation of the lungs and, if left untreated, can be fatal to the hamster.
As pneumonia is considered a set of symptoms rather than a disease in itself, there are a number of things that can cause pneumonia in hamsters. Viruses and bacteria can cause pneumonia in hamsters, such as the micro-organism mycoplasma. In some cases, there is more than one cause at play.
There are some symptoms that may suggest your hamster is suffering from pneumonia. Sneezing, watery eyes and a runny nose can point to pneumonia, as can a high temperature and lethargy. It may also appear that the hamster is having trouble breathing.
